Jack Kerouac Alley is in the North Beach district of San Francisco, just off Columbus Avenue. It is named after the writer and poet of the nineteen-fifties and sixties who is a pioneer of the Beat Generation. Adjacent to the alleyway is the famous City Lights Bookstore, which is directly across from the popular Vesuvio Cafe. Kerouac frequented both locations, which were instrumental to the maturation of the “Beat” movement. Half a century later, creativity continues to thrive in the alleyway as a rotating cast of characters put their talents on full display. Walk by on a Friday or Saturday evening, and you’re likely to observe the likes of a mime trapped in an invisible box, or a man balancing a ten-speed bicycle on his nose. Two nights ago, passerby had an opportunity to experience the Classical Guitar Jukebox Monkey. Place a few bucks in her silver basket. In return, she comes to life and delights audiences with a beautiful performance of classical music.

I am a few weeks shy of my thirty-fifth birthday, and it goes without saying that I am a little further along in my life than the couple pictured below. I remember wondering, shortly after I pressed the shutter on my camera to capture this moment, how likely it would be that the couple would remain together for the rest of their lives. The fact that this question even crossed my mind is indicative of how much I have changed throughout the years. I love this photograph because it reminds me of the beauty of young love – passionate, fleeting and filled with hope.
